It is so hard to guess their gender. The best way to be sure is to do a genetic analysis. The second almost waterproof method is to see, if they lay eggs. Almost because birds can also have problems with their reproduction organs. The worst method: behaviour.
I was sure once, that my Muffintschik is male. I was happy, because I love their dance. And he was rather aggressive and more, everything you would address to a male animal - male pigeons are also more aggressive. But after months he looked after him and he stood above an egg, which he laid.
Also: Pigeons dont discriminate that strong regarding sex. I see female and female mating or male and male. Also even if it is a hetero pair, I witness very often how the male mate the female and then the female mates the male. If you need sometime a example for samesex relationships in the animal kingdom: pigeons are doing it too. That is also a reason, why their behavioir is not a good indicator for their actual sex.
I was kind of sad, because I wont see cool pigeon courtship dances. You may ask why I use male pronouns. The reason is, that we were for months sure that he is male that it felt weird to use a different pronoun. Actually never a big deal, besides people getting confused if I talk about Muffin.
This time I was 100% sure, that Kyuken is male. I always said, that we both are the roosters in this household and we can soon start to exercise cool dances to impress our hens and rooster.
Buuuut, he got quite lovey-dovey with Hähnchen (mother of Muffin) and after few months they build a nest. We were happy, because Kyuken could than fertilise new eggs for us.
At first there was one egg. Hähnchen laid her first egg, right? Day after a second appeared and the time between was way to short. It has usually to be 48h. And an third egg appeared on the next day. Actually it could be, that Hähnchen laid 3 eggs pigeon do that sometimes. However she is a bit older and lays one egg usually.
So the conclusion is: I got scammed by Kyuken. I will again not witness cool courtship dances and no one will fertilise eggs. :( I will never guess their sex again, rather wait if suddenly eggs appear or not
